Rajendra Nath

Rajendranath Malhotra was born on June 8, 1931, in Tikamgarh state, which is now in Madhya Pradesh. His father, Kartarnath, was the I.G. of Police in Riva state. These were all independent states then, ruled by rajas. They were a hockey team with eight brothers (two died) and four sisters. Premnath was the eldest and He was second. His school and college days were all spent in Riva. He studied upto F.Sc.

Later on, his family settled in Jabalpur. Premnath revolted against their father’s wishes and came to Bombay to establish himself in films. They were great fans of Prithviraj Kapoor, so he joined Prithvi Theatre. After which he became a hero in films and was well known. His father never really liked the idea of him acting in films.

Sometime after this, he came to Bombay on a holiday. And when He was there, he tried to get admission in college for higher studies. But fate would have otherwise and he got interested in acting and joined PTA (a theatre group) and later, Prithvi Theatre, he also did A.I.R. and Radio Ceylon plays on the air. At the same time, He was struggling in films. He kept doing inconsequential roles, just to keep the home fires burning,

During His days of struggle, Premnath and his wife Bina Rai helped him a lot. Premnath helped him to get roles in movies. But still, the right break was eluding him. At this time, His father was trying his best to get him back to Jabalpur. Whenever someone was coming to Bombay, he would bribe them to convince him to come back. But as He was determined to make it in films, he would not relent. Since he did not want to trouble Premnath anymore, he moved into a small guest house.

He had done lots of films like Shararat, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (old), Miss India, Hum Sab Chor Hain. he played very small roles and did not get noticed at all. In Ghulam Begum Badshah, he even played the villain’s chamcha! But He was really not getting anywhere.

Then, His brother decided to make a film called Prisoner of Golconda, and He was to play the side hero. Premnath was the hero and Agha was playing the comedian. He had pinned a lot of hopes on that movie, but it flopped and he had to start His struggle once again. Had this film done well, who knows, he might have been a top hero. Actually, Premnath was trying to fit him into the hero slot.

His best break came in the form of S. Mukherji’s Dil Deke Dekho, which was directed by Nasir Hussain. He was an instant hit. Till then, he used to go to people requesting work and suddenly, people started coming to offer him work. Then came Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai, which was also a big hit. But a bigger hit was the character, Popatlal, who he played in that movie. The name stuck, and was later used in many movies. Even when he went abroad, people called him Popatlal!

One person He was very friendly with was Shammi Kapoor, as They both started together at the Prithvi Theatre. Later on, Raj Kapoor married His sister Krishna.

He did two films with the celebrated derector Bimal Roy in Prem Patra(1962) and Usne Kaha Tha(1960) with Sunil Dutt and Nanda. Some of his other popular films are Janwar, Jawan Mohabbat, Tum Haseen Main Jawan, Raj Kapoor’s Prem Rog, Purab Aur Paschim, Mujhe Jeene Do with Sunil Dutt and Waheeda Rahman. He even did a lot of varied roles in the South. His last film was Sauda and Neelam Kothari. Rajendra Nath, had essayed comic roles in almost all movies starring Shammi Kapoor of the 60s. He had acted in many films in Hindi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri and also in South Indian movies. Rajendra Nath died in Mumbai on 13th Feb 2008 after prolonged illness. He was 76. The actor had been suffering from breathing problems for the last several years.
